The oral decongestants ephedrine, pseudoephedrine, and
phenylpropanolamine all have alpha-adrenoceptor agonist activity. Phentolamine methylate (Regitine) is
a competitive, nonspecific alpha-adrenoceptor antagonist that presumably
produces smooth muscle relaxation by blocking the (antierectile)
postsynaptic [alpha. Because alpha-adrenoreceptor stimulation produces both
vasoconstriction and bronchoconstriction, the pharmacologic reduction of
alpha-adrenergic activity via alpha-adrenoceptor antagonists is
certainly warranted for patients with pulmonary disease. |
