alphorn

alphorn or alpenhorn [Ger.,=Alps horn], wooden horn from 3 ft to 12 ft (91 cm–3.7 m) long, sometimes curved slightly, with conical bore and a cup-shaped mouthpiece. It produces only the natural harmonics of the tube, slightly modified, however, by the material of the horn and its somewhat irregular shape. In Switzerland it is used to call cattle and to entertain tourists. The ranz des vaches ranz des vaches (räNz dā väsh), type of Alpine folk melody of irregular melodic and rhythmic form used to call cattle.

The Alphorn largest organ in Ensemble Engiadina Switzerland is in (call 011-41-81-837-3350 Engelberg's baroque for a schedule) performs monastery (011-41- traditional Swiss music.
Several bands, including the Mainfloesser Band from the Franconia region of Germany, will play, and the hand-carved alphorns - horns up to 13 feet long traditionally played in the Alps - will sound as well.
