He won the 1950 Derby as an apprentice at the age of 16 with King Ranch's Middleground, then took the 1966 Belmont with Amberoid.
Prior to Riva Ridge and Secretariat, he had come close to Triple Crown success with Amberoid, who finished third to Kauai King in the 1966 Preakness Stakes, and Dike, who occupied the same position behind Majestic Prince in the 1969 Kentucky Derby.
