the Graeco-Roman epoch in the Marxist periodization of historical development (see HISTORICAL MATERIALISM, MODE OF PRODUCTION). Within classical Marxism, ancient society is seen as based on a 'S lave’mode of production. More recently however, the heterogeneity of historically existing modes of production has been emphasized by Marxist sociologists. Nevertheless, the significance of SLAVERY, together with military conquest, remains important in explaining both the expansion and the ultimate decline of Graeco-Roman society.
