The low-lying areas are prone to annual floods, and severe water-logging and a lack of sanitation provide a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Chief minister Mayawati met Nepal's Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss the flood situation in Uttar Pradesh and later shot off a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh blaming Nepal for the annual floods in the Terai due to release of excessive water by dams in the Himalayan kingdom.
He said the department had also provided 10000 nets to support roughly 500 river banks and protect villages against annual floods.
