anorthite

Feldspar mineral, calcium aluminosilicate (CaAl2Si2O8), that occurs as white or grayish, brittle, glassy crystals. Primarily a rock-forming mineral, it is used in the manufacture of glass and ceramics. Anorthite occurs in basic igneous rocks (see acid and basic rocks).

The white, grayish, or reddish calcium-rich end member of the plagioclase feldspar series; composition ranges from Ab10An90to Ab0An100, where Ab = NaAlSi3O8and An = CaAl2Si2O8. Also known as calciclase; calcium feldspar.
