(əfē`lēən, ăp'hē`–), point farthest from the sun in the orbit of a body about the sun. See apsisapsis
(pl. apsides), point in the orbit of a body where the body is neither approaching nor receding from another body about which it revolves. Any elliptical orbit has two apsides.

(ap-hee -lee-ŏn) The point in the orbit of a planet, comet, or artificial satellite in solar orbit that is farthest from the Sun. The Earth is at aphelion on or about July 3.

Although they approximate circles, all orbits are elliptical. The point in a satellite’s orbit where it is farthest from the Sun is called its aphelion (from the Greek words apo, meaning “away,” and helios, meaning “sun”).
