Something like getting your ears pierced, something promoted as so simple, minimal, quick, and expected in American white society (and therefore good for minorities as well), that it cannot be categorized along with appendectomies, tumor removal, etc.
The procedure, called a cholecystectomy, is performed 500,000 times a year, making it more common than knee or hip replacements or appendectomies.
Surgery is necessary, but appendectomies are common.
