A field army unit designed to close and destroy the enemy by fire and maneuver, to repel hostile assault in close combat, and to provide support for tanks.

Returning to Quantico in the summer of 1990, he attended the Marine Command and Staff College and upon graduation was ordered back to 1st Marine Division where he was assigned as Commanding Officer, 3d Light Armored Infantry Battalion.
He served with the 58th Armored Infantry Battalion of the 8th Armored Division as it moved through central Germany in the waning days of the Third Reich.
