Formula ads trumpet the putative benefits of artificial milk ("closer than ever to breastmilk"), but the real message--that bottle-feeding is the norm--is conveyed through less visible forms of representation.
``Many women think there's no difference or very little difference between breast milk and artificial milk,'' said Ellen ``Binky'' Petok, a lactation consultant with Encino Tarzana Regional Medical Center whose business is called the Pump Station.
Infants fed artificial milks (formula) put on weight more quickly than those that are breastfed, thereby inaccurately classifying breastfed infants as underweight.
