Astrometric measurements, unlike the Doppler method, determine the orientation of an orbiting body and can therefore gauge its true mass. NASA announced funding for the 5-year mission, known as FAME (Full-sky Astrometric Mapping Explorer), last month. He reanalyzed the movement of Lalande 21185 recorded on photographic plates taken at the observatory between 1930 and 1984, and he tracked the star's motion from 1988 to the present using a photoelectric detector called MAP (Multichannel Astrometric Photometer). |
