augiteMost common pyroxene mineral, occurring chiefly as blocky crystals in basalts, gabbros, andesites, and various other dark igneous rocks. It also is a common constituent of lunar basalts and meteorites and may be found in certain metamorphic rocks, such as pyroxenites. Because the diopside-hedenbergite series and augite are nearly indistinguishable, the term augite is sometimes used to designate any dark green to black pyroxene with monoclinic symmetry (three unequal crystallographic axes with one oblique intersection). augite [′ȯ‚jīt] (mineralogy) (Ca,Mg,Fe)(Mg,Fe,Al)(Al,Si)2O6A general name for the monoclinic pyroxenes; occurs as dark green to black, short, stubby, prismatic crystals, often of octagonal outline. The only samples in our suite of standards analyzed by more than one laboratory or different analysts were: Cr-bearing augite from Nevada; A-99 basaltic glass from Hawaii; and partial analyses of hornblende, pyrope, and augite from Kakanui, New Zealand, and VG-2 glass from the Juan de Fuca Ridge. These holes are in the same geological location as the Malachite Zone along the contact of the augite syenite and the Two Duck Lake gabbro but are one kilometer to the south of the Malachite Zone. |
