automated altitude reporting

automated altitude reporting

The function of a transponder that responds to Mode C interrogation by transmitting an aircraft's altitude. The same is done in increments of 100 ft. The signal is transmitted with Mode C framing pulses. The transponder should be adjusted on the Mode A/3 code specified by ATC (air traffic control) and, if equipped, to reply on Mode C with its altitude-reporting capability activated. This is unless the ATC directs deactivation or the aircraft equipment has not been calibrated and tested.
