Autopolyploidy

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Autopolyploidy

a multiple increase in the cells of an organism of the initial number of chromosomes characteristic of the given species. Autopolyploidy is significant in the ontogeny of plants and animals and also in phylogeny, primarily in plants. In animals, however, it is significant in parthenogenesis. By artificially inducing autopolyploidy using high temperatures, irradiation, and chemical compounds, it has been possible to create autopolyploidal forms and varieties of buckwheat, rye, sugar beet, and other crops.

Autopolyploidy in angiosperms: have we grossly underestimated the number of species?
The purpose of this study is, first, to characterize the different complexes within the group of yellow-flowered species, especially the hitherto unknown complex in North Africa, and, second, to discuss the geographical variation of this low ploidy level group (2n = 2x) in relation to the cytological variation by autopolyploidy or allopolyploidy that is very widespread in section Polium.
