auxiliary memory

(computer science)
A high-speed memory that is in a large main frame or supercomputer, is not directly addressable by the central processing unit, and is connected to the main memory by a high-speed data channel.

auxiliary memory

A high-speed memory bank used in mainframes and supercomputers. It is not directly addressable by the CPU; rather, it functions like a solid state drive, secondary to the main memory. Data are transferred from auxiliary memory to main memory over a high-bandwidth channel. See auxiliary storage.
