a system of weights used in many English-speaking countries. It is based on the pound, which contains 16 ounces or 7000 grains. 100 pounds (US) or 112 pounds (Brit) is equal to 1 hundredweight and 20 hundredweights equals 1 ton

The system of units which has been commonly used in English-speaking countries for measurement of the mass of any substance except precious stones, precious metals, and drugs; it is based on the pound (approximately 453.6 grams) and includes the short ton (2000 pounds), long ton (2240 pounds), ounce (one-sixteenth pound), and dram (one-sixteenth ounce).
