From fiscal year 1997 through 2006, backlogged disability claims in the Social Security Administration's processing system doubled, reaching about 576,000 cases.
Some agencies actually have the staff count the backlogged work each week to determine if it is growing or staying the same.
While it met fiscal year 2006 targets for half of the 15 backlogged application types, USCIS may have difficulty eliminating its backlog for two complex application types that constitute nearly three-quarters of the backlog.
