Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. The port for Panama City, Balboa was the administrative headquarters of the Panama Canal Zone. It was also the site of a U.S. navy base (closed 1999).

Balboa 

city and port in the Panama Canal Zone, near the entrance to the canal from Pacific Bay. Population, 3,100 (1960). It has a terminal railroad station and is a military naval base of the USA.

The balboas are issued by the Banco Nacional de Panama, a government-owned commercial bank that acts as the financial agent of the government but does not centralize official holdings of reserves nor acts as lender of last resort.
