balloon drag [bə′lün ‚drag] (meteorology) A small balloon, loaded with ballast and inflated so that it will explode at a predetermined altitude, which is attached to a larger balloon; frequently used to retard the ascent of a radiosonde during the early part of the flight so that more detailed measurements may be obtained.
