All still have mouths at the bottom of their snouts and thin beards of whiskerlike barbels that can detect trace concentrations of waterborne chemicals. Arowana, called "dragon fish" because of enormous scales and long, whisker-like chin barbels, inhabited Southeast Asian streams for 100 million years. It is a bottom-feeder that uses barbels - worm-like sensory organs on the bottom of its protruded snouts that function like our senses of taste and smell - to locate clams, shrimp, marine worms and fish eggs, especially herring eggs. |
