The researchers studied the barn swallow, Hirundo rustica erythrogaster, which scientists regard as socially monogamous. This odor irritates birds' trigeminal systems, similar to our sense of smell, yet is environmentally friendly and harmless and is effective against spar rows, starling, pigeons, barn swallows, gulls, woodpeckers and more.
