barrage
1. a usually gated construction, similar to a low dam, across a watercourse, esp one to increase the depth of water to assist navigation or irrigation
2. Fencing a heat or series of bouts in a competition

barrage [bə′räzh]
(civil engineering)
An artificial dam which increases the depth of water of a river or watercourse, or diverts it into a channel for navigation or irrigation.
(ordnance)
A prearranged barrier of fire designed to protect friendly troops and installations by impeding enemy movement across defensive lines or areas.

I have been barraged with schools of flying fish, seen splotchy mats of sargasso weed stretching to the horizon, and been submerged by white capped waves while furling the jib during a storm.
Across the street, the only business open in the area, the Nam Nam Food Mart & Restaurant, is suddenly barraged by a group of homeless people seeking a snack to hold them until they can scrounge up dinner somewhere.
There's nothing like picking up the handset of a ringing telephone, only to be barraged by an unsolicited call from someone who is trying to sell you something.
