runner

runner or stolon, slender, creeping stem capable of taking root where its nodes touch the ground and thereby producing new shoots. The runner itself usually dies at the end of the season, leaving independent new plants. Among the plants that propagate by means of runners are the strawberry, the black raspberry, white clover, and some grasses.

Slender stem that grows horizontally along the ground, giving rise to roots and aerial (vertical) branches at specialized points called nodes. Many annual and perennial grasses have creeping stolons (e.g., bent grass).

runner [′rən·ər]
(botany)
A horizontally growing, sympodial stem system; adventitious roots form near the apex, and a new runner emerges from the axil of a reduced leaf. Also known as stolon.
(engineering)
In a plastics injection or transfer mold, the channel (usually circular) that connects the sprue with the gate to the mold cavity.
(metallurgy)
The part of a casting between itself and the gate assembly of the mold.
A channel through which molten metal flows from one receptacle to another.
(mining engineering)
A vertical timber sheet pile used to prevent collapse of an excavation.
