basification

[‚bās·ə·fə′kā·shən]
(geology)
Development of a more basic rock, usually with more hornblende, biotite, and oligoclase, by contamination of a granitic magma in the assimilation of country rock.

Basification

in geology, a hypothetical process of transforming the continental crust into an oceanic one with a gradual replacement of the silica and alkali in the “granitic” layer of the crust by magnesium, calcium, and iron coming from below (the metasomatic basification of V. V. Tikhomirov). This process would also occur by the “dissolving” of the granites and gneisses in the molten superheated basalt rising from the mantle, as proposed by V. V. Belousov and B. A. Petrushevskii.
