Somatuline([R]) was initially developed and continues to be used in the treatment of acromegaly (a disorder caused by the over-production of growth hormone secondary to a benign tumour of the anterior pituitary gland) and is also approved, outside of North America, for the treatment of symptoms associated with neuroendocrine tumours (particularly of carcinoid type).
In addition, Decapeptyl([R]) is also indicated in the treatment of uterine fibroids (a benign tumour of muscle tissues in the uterus), endometriosis (proliferation of endometrial tissue, the mucous membrane that lines the uterine wall outside the reproductive tract), prior to surgery or when surgery is not deemed appropriate, as well as early-onset puberty and female infertility (in vitro fertilisation).
