bentonite (bĕn`tənīt'): see clay clay, common name for a number of fine-grained, earthy materials that become plastic when wet. Chemically, clays are hydrous aluminum silicates, ordinarily containing impurities, e.g., potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, or iron, in small amounts.

A clay formed from volcanic ash decomposition and largely composed of montmorillonite and beidellite. Also known as taylorite.

A clay, formed from decomposed volcanic ash, with a high content of the mineral montmorillonite; has the capability of absorbing a considerable amount of water, and swells accordingly.

The particle size distributions (PSD) of the bentonitic clays were determined by the sedimentation technique method.
