A study of newborn children from the Yaqui Valley performed close to the period these children were conceived reported elevated pesticide levels, with cord blood values of lindane, heptachlor, benzene hexachloride, aldrin, and endrin all exceeding World Health Organization established limits (International Programme on Chemical Safety 2005), and p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE) measured in the parts per million (Garcia and Meza 1991). Carson also trumpeted studies of rats which suggested DDT was a liver carcinogen, and gathered anecdotal evidence of harm in human beings, like a farmer whose bone marrow wasted away after repeatedly inhaling a mixture of DDT and benzene hexachloride he used to spray his fields. Bakken and Seip (69) analyzed colostrum and breast milk from three women for hexachlorobenzene (HCB), benzene hexachloride (BHC), and total DDT for up to 9-16 weeks postpartum. |
