(biochemistry)
Catabolism of fatty acids in which the fatty acid chain is shortened by successive removal of two carbon fragments from the carboxyl end of the chain.

Because beta oxidation of fatty acids occurs in the mitochondrial matrix, long-chain fatty acids must be actively transported into the mitochondria.
CPT and HOAD are mitochondrial enzymes that participate in the transportation of fatty acids through the mitochondrial membrane and in the beta oxidation of fatty acids in the mitochondrial matrix, respectively.
