Beta-endorphin is the stress hormone that builds up in a natural labor to help the laboring woman transcend pain. So now beta-endorphin joins the cohort of neuro-messengers such as the earlier discussed serotonin, both theorized to be involved in mood regulation and in pain transmission. Using a ropes course environment to induce perceived risk, Jones and Ellis (1996) tested the theory that secretion of plasma beta-endorphin (a naturally occurring opiate-like peptide theoretically linked to pleasure) as a result of arousal through perceived risk would reinforce risk-taking behavior. |
