biphenyl [bī′fen·əl] (organic chemistry) C12H10A white or slightly yellow crystalline hydrocarbon, melting point 70.0°C, boiling point 255.9°C, and density 1.9896, which gives plates or monoclinic prismatic crystals; used as a heat-transfer medium and as a raw material for chlorinated diphenyls. Abnormally high polychlorinated biphenyl levels in striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) affected by the 1990-1992 Mediterranean epizootic. Individual congeners are produced by reacting the basic biphenyl structural unit with chlorine, replacing anywhere from 1 to 10 of the original hydrogens with chlorine yielding up to 209 possible arrangements (congeners). If the "pro-lifers" are so concerned about the health of fetuses, why aren't they out in the streets protesting and demanding that the Bush Administration do something about heavy metal and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) pollution in our lakes, rivers and oceans? |
