bit count appendage

[′bit ‚kau̇nt ə′pen·dij]
(computer science)
One of the two-byte elements replacing the parity bit stripped off each byte transferred from main storage to disk volume (the other element is the cyclic check); these two elements are appended to the block during the write operation; on a subsequent read operation these elements are calculated and compared to the appended elements for accuracy.
