bit slice

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Wikipedia 0.03 sec.
(architecture)bit slice - A technique for constructing a processor from modules, each of which processes one bit-field or "slice" of an operand. Bit slice processors usually consist of an ALU of 1, 2, 4 or 8 bits and control lines (including carry or overflow signals usually internal to the CPU). For example, two 4-bit ALUs could be arranged side by side, with control lines between them, to form an 8-bit ALU. A sequencer executes a program to provide data and control signals.

The AMD Am2901 is an example.

In comparison, 3-D systems excel at in-depth bit slice analysis, fully automated double-sided board inspection and z-height measurements.
Placement control is available by individual bits, by bit slice, by bit slice groups in arrays, and where there can be empty bits, sharing bits, flipped bits, special alignments or interleaving.
The cores that are now available from CAST for use in Xilinx programmable logic are: -- C16450 UART -- C16550 UART with FIFOs -- C_UART Compact UART -- C6850 Asynchronous Communications Interface Adapter (ACIA) -- C8255A Peripheral Interface -- C8259A Programmable Interrupt Controller -- C2901 Bit Slice unit "With this addition, CAST becomes the largest contributor of cores to the AllianceCORE program," said Mark Bowlby, AllianceCORE program manager at Xilinx.
