booby trap [′büb·ē ‚trap] (ordnance) An explosive charge such as a mine, grenade, demolition block, shell, or bulk explosive fitted with a detonator and a firing device, and usually concealed and set to explode when an unsuspecting person touches off its firing mechanism by stepping upon, lifting, or moving a harmless-looking object.
