A braid of order n consists of two parallel lines, sets of n points on each of the lines with a one-to-one correspondence between them, and n nonintersecting space curves, each of which connects one of the n points on one of the parallel lines with the corresponding point on the other; the space curves are configured so that no curve turns back on itself, in the sense that its projection on the plane of the parallel lines lies between the parallel lines and intersects any line parallel to them no more than once, and any two such projections intersect at most a finite number of times.
