(Gonopteryx rhamni), a butterfly of the family Pieridae. The wings are angular, with a span of up to 6 cm. The males are lemon yellow, and the females are greenish white. In the middle of each wing there is a small orange-yellow spot. The brimstone is found throughout Europe and the temperate zone of Asia. Soon after the butterflies emerge from the pupae at the end of summer, they go into hibernation. Flight is resumed in early spring. The caterpillar, which is green with a white stripe along its sides, feeds on buckthorn leaves.
