Brimstone

(pop culture)
Raining fire and panic upon the scurrying populace who woefully find themselves in his lumbering path, the 50-foot terror called Brimstone is the DC Comics-equivalent of Godzilla—a creature that exists solely to destroy. Brimstone blazed into the DC Universe in Legends #1 (1986), the miniseries in which the evil despot Darkseid of Apokolips attempts to eliminate earthly opposition by eroding the public's confidence in its superheroes. Darkseid's obsequious envoy, the sadistic Desaad, sabotaged a S.T.A.R. Labs nuclear generator to explode, as a result creating Brimstone, a 60,000-pound behemoth possessing some degree of sentience. Programmed with the conviction that it is a fallen angel, Brimstone cuts a swath across the DC Universe with its fiery sword and generation of intense heat. The Justice League of America, Firestorm the Nuclear Man, and the Suicide Squad have narrowly avoided meltdowns in their conflicts with Brimstone. The creature has on several occasions been eliminated, but is capable of regeneration—and repeated devastation. Brimstone shambled onto television in the “Initiation” episode of the Cartoon Network's Justice League Unlimited (2004–present). In its TV incarnation, the creature was the out-of-control creation of Chinese inventor Chong-Mi, with Justice League recruits including Green Arrow and Captain Atom taking down the fiery beast.

Brimstone

(Gonopteryx rhamni), a butterfly of the family Pieridae. The wings are angular, with a span of up to 6 cm. The males are lemon yellow, and the females are greenish white. In the middle of each wing there is a small orange-yellow spot. The brimstone is found throughout Europe and the temperate zone of Asia. Soon after the butterflies emerge from the pupae at the end of summer, they go into hibernation. Flight is resumed in early spring. The caterpillar, which is green with a white stripe along its sides, feeds on buckthorn leaves.
