brisance [brə′zäns]
(ordnance) The ability of an explosive to shatter the medium which confines it; the shattering effect of the explosive. brisance The crushing or shattering effect of a high explosive. Brisance the capacity of an explosive to produce localized crushing of a medium at a distance from a cylindrical blasting charge not more than 2.5 times its radius. Brisance increases with the increase of density and rate of detonation of an explosive and is evaluated by the decrease in height (in mm) of a standard lead cylinder upon the explosion on it of an explosive charge. The brisance of industrial explosives varies from 3-12 mm (low-brisance explosives) to 20-28 mm (high-brisance explosives). Want to thank TFD for its existence?
