Brooder

a device for the localized warming of young poultry in the first weeks of life. In the USSR electric brooders, in which the temperature can be changed by a regulatory screw and maintained automatically by means of a thermostat, are the most common type. In gas brooders, the air under the hood is heated by the burner flame or a ceramic radiator heated by it; air access to the burner is regulated by a thermostat. One electric or gas brooder will hold 500 chicks. Stoves with horizontal flues and pipes with central water heating, laid along or across the poultry house (covered with awnings), are also used for warming young fowl; in poultry factories battery brooders are used.
