The spineflower, a member of the buckwheat family, has a dime-size grayish bloom.
Some members of the buckwheat family have contributed to agriculture, such as crop research, but so far those studies haven't been conducted for the spineflower, Rutherford said.
The buckwheat family (Polygonaceae) consists almost entirely of ornamental perennials, many of which are drought tolerant.
