burbot (bûr`bət): see cod cod, member of the large family Gadidae, comprising commercially important food fishes. The cods include the hake and the haddock, all found in the N Atlantic and Pacific.

burbot

Elongated fish (Lota lota), the only freshwater member of the cod family. It lives in cold rivers and lakes of Europe, Asia, and North America. A mottled, greenish or brown bottom-dweller, it descends as deep as 700 ft (200 m). It may grow about 3.6 ft (1.1 m) long. It has very small, embedded scales, a long anal fin, and two dorsal fins. The burbot is valued as food in some areas.
