(civil engineering)
A channel built to carry excess water from a stream. Also known as flood relief channel; floodway.
A channel constructed to divert water from a main channel.

Bypass Channel 

the open portion of a river channel, unobstructed by hydraulic engineering installations, designed to allow the passage of water during the construction of a hydroengineering complex (a complex consisting of power plants, reservoirs, canals, and the like). The channel is blocked during the final construction phase.
