Calcicoles

(also calciphiles), plants that grow predomi-nantly in soils rich in calcium, and also on outcrops of lime-stones, marls, chalk, and other rocks. The confinement ofcalcicoles to soils that contain a considerable quantity of lime isa result of the alkaline reaction of the soil and some of the soil’sphysical properties (for example, easy permeability by water orrapid absorption of heat). Examples of calcicoles are the snow-drop anemone, six-petaled spiraea, European larch, and Quercuscalcarea. Under certain conditions, some calcicoles can grow onnoncalcareous soils.
