Calcifuges

plants that grow well on soils with an acid or neutral reaction and poorly on those rich in lime. If the action of calcium is in equilibrium with the concentration of hydrogen ions (pH no higher than 5.7), calcifuges may grow under conditions of high calcium content (for example, 300 mg per liter for sphagnum mosses). Examples of calcifuges are sphagnum mosses and many higher marsh plants (such as cotton grass, sundew, and butterbur).
