Calean

Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.
Calean

a pipe that was widely used in Turkey, Persia, India, China, Afghanistan, and Middle Asia (the chilim); at present it is going out of use.

The calean consists of a vessel filled with water, a pipe with tobacco secured in its neck (the lower end of the tube is submerged), and a leather hose or wooden tube placed in the vessel above the level of the water (the smoker draws the smoke, which has been filtered through the water, through the hose or tube). Caleans are made from the fruit of the pumpkin or coconut or from metal; expensive caleans are decorated with silver and ivory.
