a machine in which paper or cloth is glazed or smoothed by passing between rollers calender2 a member of a mendicant order of dervishes in Turkey, Iran, and India calender [′kal·ən·dər] (engineering) To pass a material between rollers or plates to thin it into sheets or to make it smooth and glossy. The machine which performs this operation. Calender a press with two to 20 horizontal rollers between which material (fabric, paper, or rubber) in the form of rolls or sheets is passed to increase its density or smoothness or to apply an embossed pattern or design. Machine calenders, supercalenders, embossing calenders, and gauging calenders are used in the paper industry. The rollers of calenders (except embossing calenders) have a smooth, polished surface and are usually made of metal. The required pressure between the rollers is produced by the weight of the rollers themselves; in some instances it may be supplemented by pneumatic or hydraulic clamping devices.
