Camisole

(Russian, kamzol), a man’s garment, fitted at the waist, knee length, sometimes sleeveless, and worn under a caftan. The camisole was introduced in France in the first half of the 17th century; in the 18th century it became widespread in other Western European countries and in Russia, with the introduction of Western European dress among noblemen. The camisole was made from broadcloth, silk, or velvet and decorated with embroidery, lace, or buttons. In the national costume of the Bashkirs, Tatars, and Kazakhs a sleeveless garment fitted at the waist that is worn by both men and women is called a kamzol.
