carrier serving area

Also found in: Acronyms 0.04 sec.

A geographic customer area that is consolidated into a single digital transmission by the telephone company. Each carrier serving area (CSA) is served by a digital loop carrier (DLC), which multiplexes hundreds of analog lines into one high-speed digital trunk. The physical size of a CSA is based on the number of lines the DLC supports and the population density. See central office.

Taking the EFM standard and applying advances in link aggregation technology, it is now possible to provide multiple megabits of symmetrical Ethernet bandwidths over extended distances, up to 18,000 feet, far beyond the typical Carrier Serving Area (CSA) limit of 12,000 feet (both these distances on 24 AWG cable).
This enables longer reach and greater bandwidth, delivering a much larger service footprint, throughout the entire Carrier Serving Area.
