(mathematics)
An arithmetic operation that occurs in the course of addition when the sum of the digits in a given position equals or exceeds the base of the number system; a multiplemof the base is subtracted from this sum so that the remainder is less than the base, and the numbermis then added to the next-higher-order digit.
