However, the emergence of wavelength-division multiplexing now requires that chromatic dispersion itself be measured over the [approximately equal to]80 nm optical bandwidth occupied by multiple wavelength channels.
Traditionally, high bandwidth signals (40 Gb/s) could only be transmitted over approximately six kilometers of standard optical fibers without optical devices to compensate for the fibers' inherent limits, such as the chromatic dispersion which results in the separation of the different optical frequencies of the signal.
Concerning chromatic dispersion, NIST has developed two systems to measure relative group delay which broadens pulses and limits the system data rate.
