Tops were known in antiquity and appeared in Europe during the Middle Ages; they are used today in many different regions of the world by both primitive and advanced societies. The principle of its motion is utilized in the gyroscope gyroscope (jī`rəskōp'), symmetrical mass, usually a wheel, mounted so that it can spin about an axis in any direction.

(Technical Office Protocol) A communications protocol for office systems developed in the early 1980s by the Computer Services division of Boeing in Seattle, WA. It is often used in conjunction with MAP, the factory automation protocol developed by GM. TOP is used in the front office, and MAP is used on the factory floor. TOP uses the CSMA/CD access method (Ethernet), while MAP uses token bus.
