She was in town over the weekend to accept the Wallis Annenberg Award for her work with Operation Smile, which has provided free reconstructive surgery to more than 90,000 children and young adults with cleft lips, cleft palates and other birth defects in 25 developing countries. At Uruapan the team did 217 procedures in four days, ranging in severity from simple repair of cleft lips to complex flap rotations for burn scars. Claire, a sophomore at Starkville High School, has raised money to provide stuffed teddy bears with cleft lips to nearly 700 children undergoing cleft palate surgery, and campaigns actively to raise awareness about the congenital condition. |
